Buying a family car can sometimes come with more complications than you think, mainly due to the needs of everyone having to be considered. So, to give you a hand whilst you search for your next family car on finance, we’ve put together some top tips for finding your perfect family motor.
Hatchback vs Saloon
Even though saloon cars usually look a lot bigger than hatchbacks, the reality is that they may not be as flexible as you think.
Sometimes loading pushchairs and prams into a saloon boot can be tricky. This is due to them having narrow openings and a high load lip. So, to avoid complications when it comes to pram transportation, we suggest that you take your pram or pushchair with you when you go to view a car. This will ensure that it will fit. Alternately, measure your pram and take a note with you to view your potential motor. Hatchbacks also allow you to transport dogs and other pets, whilst saloons don’t.
Whilst searching for a family car, opting for five doors instead of three is a given. However, you should make sure that the back pair open wide enough so that you can maneuverer small children in and out of the car. This is even more important to consider if you suffer from back problems or a tall individual. Overall though, wide-opening doors are the practical choice if you require more space and easy access.
If you need to fasten child car seats, by investing in a car which have mountain points you are making this process a lot quicker and safer. However, you should check that these mounting points are easy to access. Always take your child car seat with you when viewing a vehicle in order to see how easy it is to fit.
Whilst financing a family car, it is always good to have plenty of storage. This is incredibly helpful for cutting on clutter like children’s toys, food and drink. However, you should beware of storage near the rear of the footwell- even though it may seem useful, it isn’t that good if you are using an Isofix mounted child car seat which has leg support. This is due to the leg not being able to stand on top of a hollow storage compartment for safety reasons.
