While Audi has just revealed their version of a Spyder for the R8 Plus, McLaren looks like they will be fighting back after creating tough competition for the popular manufacturer. The new 570S Spider has been in talks for the company for quite a while now, but the figures and specs do suggest that we will not be disappointed in the final result.
The 570S may be considered as ‘entry level’, however their capacity and pure pace means that they may never feel it. The Spider version has added a folding roof mechanism to their already existing and impressive carbon tub with the 3.8 litre twin turbo V8. This opens the Sports Series range to an open-air experience for the very first time.
The roof which is in two pieces’ fold behind the driver which enables the buttresses to stay in place.
The folding roof is said to be operational up to 30mph, and will drop in just 15 seconds. It also has the ability to do this whilst the rear screen has dropped.
Mclaren have integrated a 12mm tall wing similar to that of the 570GT. This is in order to retain a similar downforce rating to the hardtop model.
Steering of the Spider is via an electro-hydraulic system, so the granular feel should be maintained like many other models that the manufacturer has available. Keeping to their usual technique, the company have also refused to fit a limited slip differential, and so the model includes the unique Brake-Steer function that McLaren has become popular for over the years.
In accordance to the mechanisms of the model, not much has changed. The yellow car does however feature a new set of alloy wheels and the three colours will be available then the car goes on the market.
According to reports this model will make its debut at this year’s Goodwood Fesitval of Speed at the end of this month, and the first units will be available to customers in August.
