Land Rover is celebrating its 50th birthday with ‘The Range Rover Story’

To mark it’s 50th birthday, Land Rover has opened a brand new exhibition which shows how the SUVs have developed since the first one was released in 1967.

‘The Range Rover Story’ is expected to be a popular attraction for visitors and tourists of all ages who are keen to find out exactly how the model has developed over time. It’s expected to generate up to 45,000 visitors over the next three years. The exhibition is situated in the Solihull factory where the Range Rover was originally made.

The showing comes after a similar celebration was done for the Land Rover Defender. However, the Land Rover Defender exhibition came to an end last year following a successful 70 years.

In accordance to the Range Rover and its prevalence in the 21st century, the theme of the Range Rover exhibition has been announced as Velar. This links with the fact that the 1967 prototypes of the Range Rover were Velar, meaning to cover or to veil. The Velar name has been reincarnated for the brand new model of Land Rover, called the Range Rover Velar- which is coincidently proving to be very popular with buyers.

The development brief for the original Range Rover included an American demand for the vehicle. It also included an ask for the allowances of a Land Rover but with high luxury comforts and accessories. However, the production of the Range Rover didn’t actually begin until 1970, and the car wasn’t on the market in the US until 1987.

While the Range Rover wasn’t originally seen as amazing or luxurious, the changes that were made to the model soon changed this perception. By replacing the suspension with coil springs rather than leaf springs, the automobile became instantly more comfortable. The suspension system therefore became more adequate for on-road driving as well as off-road.

Additionally, the Rover now also benefits from an aluminium engine. The V8 used to be acquired as a convenience when it was first created, though its understandable that the company have had to change fittings to today’s buyers and their lifestyles.

Roger Crathone, started as a technical assistant for Range Rover in 1967. He has played an important role within the exhibition, helping with its development and transferring his skills to the showing.

"We came up with a fictitious company called Velar”, said Robert who is known locally as ‘Mr Land Rover’.

"We put this vehicle into production with only seven prototypes.

"We were forced to launch the vehicle earlier than we had planned because of a promise Lord Stokes, the then British Leyland chairman, had made to the Government on launching new cars."

"It was not originally intended as a luxury vehicle but an extension of the Land Rover range offering better on-road dynamics," he added.

"It wasn't until '72/73 it started to become more of a luxury vehicle. We did more and more over time and it has become the wonderful luxury vehicle we drive today."

The exhibition fundamentally concentrates on how the Range Rover has evolved over the years. It also looks at how the automobile company has expanded. It includes the Range Rover Velar, the new Evoque edition and the Sport models.
